Social platforms told to stop suggesting children as friends In accordance with the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has declared that social media platforms should not be suggesting children as “friends” by default. This guidance is intended to help fight online grooming, as the communications watchdog suggests how platforms can tackle illegal content, including child abuse online. The expectation is for the largest platforms to change default settings so that children aren’t added to suggested friends lists – something which groomers often exploit. Additionally, platforms should ensure that children’s location information can’t be revealed in their profile or posts, as well as preventing them from receiving messages from people who are not in their contacts list.
